Static Grounding for Pharma Applications

November 1st, 2007

New VESF Series stainless steel Quick Connectors are the latest addition to the Cenelectrex range of static earthing equipment specifically designed to meet the demanding standards of cleanliness and corrosion resistance within hazardous area operations in the pharmaceutical industry.

The VESF Series stainless 2 pole plug and socket connectors allow easy, positive and secure connections to be made to removable plant items that need to be earthed and monitored during operations. They are ideal for use with plant items that need to have a temporary or semi-permanent connection to earth, such as mobile vessels, product bowls, pump carts and other removable plant sections.

The distinctive three pin configuration of the unit ensures that they cannot be confused with or connected to plant electrical circuits, and the matching male/female connection means the static earth can only be applied to the intended plant item. Using screw terminals, no hot working is required for initial installation or maintenance. Both plug and socket come with covers to ensure that when not in use they can be sealed off to prevent liquid, dirt or product ingress.ss-connector_fed0510-copy

Designed to compliment the extensive range of stainless accessories that make up the Cenelectrex Earth-Rite Multipoint range of monitoring units, the stainless connectors have been assessed by a notified body as suitable for connection to Intrinsically Safe monitoring circuits, in compliance with the ATEX directive.

Other stainless accessories recently added to the range include an indicator LED light which can be mounted in the hazardous area to give local notification of a positive earth connection. These new items compliment the range of stainless junction boxes and clamps, which make for a comprehensive range to suit the needs of the pharmaceutical industry.

The new Stainless Steel Quick Connectors are ideal for use with the Earth-Rite Mulitpoint, which is specially designed to monitor earth connection and bonds on mills, spray dryers, filters, mixing and similar items such as associated conveying lines where static build up in combustible or flammable areas may lead to catastrophic fires or explosions.

Static Grounding and Bonding Assembly is Completely Portable

February 1st, 2007

A completely portable, self-testing grounding and bonding assembly, the Bond-Rite EZ from Newson Gale Inc. makes it possible to establish and verify a proper low-resistance connection to safely dissipate static electricity in hazardous locations.

The new assemblies meet the need for safe, convenient grounding where more permanent solutions are not feasible, especially in mobile or portable equipment whose operation requires static electric discharge protection. Among these are applications in the transportation of flammable liquids, powders or gasses or for emergency response vehicles, as well as many other instances where it is necessary to establish a low-resistance bond or connection to a local ground point for mobile vehicles or portable equipment. In these cases it is time consuming and often impractical to install a permanent ground connection or to set up and test a conventional temporary bond. In these situations, the Bond-Rite EZ offers a self-contained, easy to use device, which provides and continuously verifies a low-resistance bonding connection while displaying a healthy condition through a flashing green LED indicator on the handle of the monitoring clamp (less than 10 Ohms resistance).

A safe connection is ensured by the strong clamping mechanism combined with sharp tungsten carbide “tooth contact points” that are able to penetrate even the heaviest build-up of paint, coatings, corrosion, or other insulating deposits.

Bond-Rite EZ units are approved as Intrinsically Safe Devices by Factory Mutual and CSA for Class I, II & III, Div 1 & 2, hazardous locations (all gas groups). The unit also has European ATEX approval, and is powered by a replaceable Lithium Manganese battery, which provides up to 600 hours use when continuously connected, with a shelf life of up to 10 years. They are available in a range of options, with 10, 16 or 32ft retractable Cen-Stat® cables, or portable cable reels with up to 100 ft capacity.

The Bond-Rite EZ is just part of the Cenelectrex® range of static grounding and bonding equipment available from Newson Gale, Inc., the Lakewood, NJ based specialists in hazardous area static control.

Static Grounding & Bonding Clamps and Assemblies Are FM Approved and ATEX Compliant

January 1st, 2007

The latest FM and ATEX approved stainless steel static grounding and bonding clamps and retractable cable assemblies from Newson Gale Inc. are specifically designed to dissipate static electricity in hazardous areas. They provide a sure, effective connection to ground for portable and mobile plant equipment and containers. All units are Factory Mutual (FM) Approved and ATEX Compliant, combining extremely low electrical resistance with high levels of mechanical strength.

They are available as complete assemblies with a bonding clamp and a high-performance retractable anti-static cable, or as separate items for self-assembly. Common applications include flammable liquid containers, drums, totes, IBC’s, vessels, mobile tanks and more. For extremely safety-critical applications, or where there is a need for constant monitoring of static grounding & bonding conditions, Bond-Rite Intrinsically Safe Self Testing Clamps and Earth-Rite Static Ground Monitoring and Interlock Systems are available, which provide visual verification and control capability.

FM testing and approvals for Cen-Stat Stainless Steel Clamps include meeting standards for electrical resistance, clamping force, vibration test and mechanical strength. The clamps have sharp, hardened contact tips for penetrating through paint, rust, resins, and other insulating layers. Self retracting cables are typically 16 feet in length with a 10:1 ratio with excellent flexibility and memory. Optional lengths include 10, 32 and 48 feet. All are proven to maintain their shape after at least 20,000 continuous extensions. Further, their chemical and abrasion-resistant anti-static coating prevents surface charge build-up.

In flammable/combustible atmospheres, national and Industry operating guidelines require all conductive/metallic items of the plant to be properly bonded and grounded. The consequences of an incendiary static spark in a hazardous atmosphere are simply too serious to leave to simple or non-approved devices that may not provide adequate protection in a given application. The unique Cenelectrex system offers a combination of features that provides the user with an assembly proven to perform in all common hazardous area applications.

Static-Dissipative Paddles Protect Lined Steel Pipelines

October 1st, 2006

PTFE-lined steel pipelines carrying flammable liquids are protected from static electricity build-up and discharge by a new economical grounding paddle available from Newson Gale Inc. Due to the large effective capacitance of the PTFE or similar plastic lining against a steel housing, large charges can build up in an active pipeline over a period of several hours, even days. Static build-up in lined pipe gives rise to propagating brush charges, highly energetic lightning-like sparks firing in rapid
succession. They have the capability of igniting most flammable atmospheres and even some of the more sensitive dusts. Such high-energy sparks can also produce pinholes in the plastic lining, leading to early corrosion failure of the metal pipe.

Static Dissipative Paddles

Static Dissipative Paddles

Unlike more costly fabricated or alloy-based protection, these paddles are produced through a proprietary process using static-dissipative PTFE resin. The resin is compression-moulded around and through a 304 stainless steel, perforated metal insert.

After oven sintering the resin completely encapsulates the stainless steel, isolating it from fluid contact while providing a low-resistance, dissipation path for static electricity. Independent laboratory testing has proven that the paddles are non-contaminating and non-leaching, which means that there is no possibility of process contamination. (Test data available upon request.)

Assembly is simple, the paddles are self-aligning and seat easily on any 150# ANSI lined pipe flange, with no gasketing required. Standard paddles are available for lined pipe sizes from 1-inch to 6-inches with larger sizes available upon request, all just 1/8 th inch thick. The paddle “handle” extends 2 inches above the body of the unit and is predrilled for the attachment of the grounding hardware provided with each unit.

Lined-pipe grounding paddles join the comprehensive range of static grounding and bonding equipment, including Cenelectrex® Approved Clamps and Assemblies, available from Newson Gale Inc., the Lakewood, NJ based specialists in static control for hazardous areas.
